About the Game

Backgammon is one of the oldest known board games, with origins dating back approximately 5,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia. The game combines elements of luck (dice) and strategy (piece movement and positioning), making each match unique and engaging. Two players race their 15 checkers around a board of 24 triangular points, aiming to bear off all pieces before their opponent.

The game has many regional variations and names around the world — known as Tawla in the Middle East, Tavla in Turkey, Gamão in Brazil and Portugal, Tryktrak in Poland, and 双陆棋 in Chinese. Despite its ancient roots, backgammon remains popular worldwide with active tournament circuits and millions of online players.
